Chinese medicine is often considered with energy flow and the right balance of the different kinds of energy in the human body. Whenever there is imbalance, expect illnesses to take place. In fact, much of the efforts in Chinese medicine is attributed to the study of balancing these different forces. Formally, this energy is called the qi or the chi.

The chi, as the Chinese put it, is basically the life energy that runs through all living organisms. It does not only affect living organisms as it is also present in other important spaces such as the home or one's workplace. Chi is mainly a metaphysical idea rather than a scientific one, but many people in oriental cultures believe it nonetheless. This is the driving force behind the practice of feng shui. You will realize later on that different Asian cultures have their interpretations of this energy flow and the chi is only one of them.

The chi is often likened to air, although the latter may be used in science, as some sort of energy that runs through everything that we move in. As mentioned earlier, an imbalance in chi may lead to illnesses in human beings or generally bad luck. It is common practice in feng shui that spaces should be decorated such that they become harmonious in order to bring good luck to the owner of that space.

When there is imbalance, Chinese doctors resort to practices like acupuncture in order to unlock the chi getting built up in the energy medians of our body. In terms of spaces, decorations and furniture are rearranged in order to create smooth chi flow in the household.

Modern medicine has difficulty reconciling the concept of chi with what is known in this world as both systems of medicine follow different theories when it comes to illnesses. Nonetheless, the practice of Chinese medicine and the chi remain popular among oriental cultures while even creeping into the mindset of Western society.
