According to a group of researchers, frequent consumption of energy drinks has been linked to alcohol-related problems, binge drinking and prescription drug abuse among a very specific group of users inclined to music,

The study was published in the Journal of Caffeine Research and released from the University of Buffalo was a survey that examined substance use and abuse of 226 New York professional and amateur musicians aged 18-45, researchers say that of the 94 percent of respondents who said they were heavy caffeine users, more than half said they get their caffeine jolts from energy drinks of their choice.

In the study, those that use energy drinks reported significant more misuse of legal substances compared to those who didn't drink energy drinks at all Thirty-one percent of energy drink users misused prescription drugs compared to 13 percent of nonusers while more than 70 percent reported binge drinking compared to a little less than 60 percent of nonusers.

They’ve also found that 68 percent of the musical enthusiasts reported heavy drinking at least once or twice a year while at least 74 reported experienced at least one alcohol-related social problem. The alcohol-related social problems are defined as a hangover, arguing with others about their drinking, or doing something under the influence which was regretted later

They also reported recreational drug use. Around 52 percent said they used marijuana, 25 percent used psychedelic drugs, 23 percent abused prescription drugs and 21 percent said they used cocaine.

Co-author Kathleen E. Miller says that musicians constitute an especially fertile demographic for energy drinks, given their lifestyle often comprised of late or irregular hours and sleep deprivation and the need for that extra energy promised by such drinks.
